Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

We need to pay attention to what we eat, to reduce carbon footprint.

I totally agree. I think we should all have diets with less meat. The more meat we eat, the more we affect the world. We should all consider going vegetarian then slowly ease into a vegan diet which will be better than vegetarian. It will help the world and it will also help our health.

I agree I think that if you are gonna move into a vegan diet it is hard and will take a lot of time which is why not to many people have done it so. I think that people should just have at least 1 or 2 days of vegan meals and that will make a big difference.

I agree but I don't think it is necessary to go full vegan. As long as we (humans) reduce our consumption of meat at a sustainable rate that should be enough to reduce our carbon footprint.

I agree and disagree, Yes it would be good to eat a couple meals a week that are vegetarian, and it would be great to have the world go mostly vegetarian. In reality that won't happen, there are many cultures that have certain traditions around meet and many holiday calibrations, like thanksgiving. So I think that a more realistic idea would be to have a more sustainable way of producing the meat, if we were to feed it seed instead of clear cut forests for grass fed cows. There are also scientist who are working on ways to trap the methane that cows release and turn it into energy.
So, yes we should all try to eat less meat, but not necessarily go vegetarian.

Coming from a culture that eats a lot of meat (at least once a day), I would agree with Naomi.  Doing away with meat won't be an easy task.  Rather finding sustainable ways of producing meat seams like a viable option.

I believe that maintaining a vegetarian diet is not too difficult. However, transitioning every person to a strictly plant-based diet would be a great challenge. I agree that the best way to help this issue is by taking steps towards a more sustainable meat industry.

Greta Sharma

I agree with the fact that doing away with meat is not easy. It's also not a reasonable solution as only 22% of the world are vegetarians and we can't just stop eating meat overnight. A more sustainable solution is to find better ways of producing meat or simply add one or two days where we eat plant-based.
