Extreme Weather

In the Northern Hemisphere in 2017 and 2018 brought several destructive hurricanes to the shores of North America, the Caribbean, and throughout the Pacific rim. Such extreme weather events are predicted to get more common and more severe with increasing climate change.

Several participating classes in the ISCFC were or are in the path of these storms and we hope for the best for them, their families and communities.

We would love to hear from students affected directly and indirectly by extreme weather events, and also any students who have been following the news this summer.

What are your thoughts about the connection between climate change and extreme weather events? Has this hurricane season increased your concern about climate change or not? Do you think that US citizens and residents (and others in the region) will take climate change more seriously now?

I am not directly effected by the hurricanes but I hope people will start taking climate change more seriously because people will have t leave there homes and if a lot of people have to move than areas will be even more overpopulated then they already are.

I totally agree. People really should start to take climate change more seriously. I can't believe that it is still happening. I am also not really effected by it, but I am sure it would be very frightening and miserable for those people and animals.

think that you are right, climate change has risen to the top of many people of powers agenda and It is now becoming a huge topic of discussion. I think it is a understatement and undermining the work of the people at the highest order trying to push for eco friendly world the people should start to take climate change seriously. it think that 60-70% of people in North America consider climate change a very big problem. the problem is the 30-40% get more media coverage cause the media promotes the bad over the good.

Yuh, I also agree. People should take it more seriously.

I agree that climate change should be taken more seriously, and I also noticed the correlation between climate change and extreme weather events. For example, according to the Environmental Defense Fund, climate change leads to increased risk of drought because higher temperatures boost evaporation, which dries out soil, leading to more droughts, such as the one that we are currently experiencing in California. Climate change also increases the risk of storms, such as hurricanes, and floods. One example of that is Hurricane Harvey, which struck southeastern Texas and Louisiana. The rainfall was 15% more intense, and three times as likely to occur to the the increased moisture in the air. Overall, climate change has a great impact on extreme weather events, and we need to take immediate action to prevent extreme weather from harming people in the future.
