Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Reuse and repurpose

I reuse many things. My family doesn’t spend a lot of money at once normally we save then spend. Reusing is just something that I feel is normal. For example I’ve always reuse jars to drink out of or find away to make decorations for my room. I do like shopping but I try to work on not doing impulse buying. For the longest time I would say I did not have “style” since I wore my fathers old t-shirts that he didn’t wear anymore for acouple years. (I still sometimes do now) but that’s another way that I definitely saved money. And whenever I do art projects if I’m cutting out, coloring or whatever I do try very much to use every bit of the paper or if I don’t I put it away til I need it for something else smile

I can relate to this in many ways because my family also does not like to spend money if they don't have too. I always think instead of buying new clothes I could see if I have clothes that are in still good condition or ones that I haven't taken the tag off yet. In addition, I love to get hand me downs from older cousins and family members because it helps our family save money. In school I always try to reuse my tools as much as possible. For example, for math class I always reuse the paper for our quizzes and homework by using the other blank side. Also, the containers that we get from the grocery stores reusable packaging, my family uses that for our containers instead of using money to buy more containers.

I would say that my family tries to reuse most things as well. whenever we order food from restaurants we always wash the containers and reuse them. when my younger cousin was born, my older cousin and I gave him our baby clothes that were still in very good condition. we also gave him toys and stuffies that we used to play with. whenever I have clothes that I don't think I will wear them whenever i go out anymore, i would wear them at home as pajamas. at school, i would also try to use both sides of the paper, and every year if my binders and backpack are still in good condition I would just take out the paper and assignments from the previous year and reuse the binder for the next year. when we go grocery shopping and we forget to bring reusable bags, we would purchase those plastic bags but we would always reuse them as trash bags.

I can relate, my family always tries to reuse almost anything. For example, clothes that I have, that don't fit me anymore, I give to my younger brother. When my brother says the clothes that I gave him don't fit, we hand them down to my younger cousins. We have been reusing clothes this way for years. I like getting hand-me-downs and my dad has given me lots. I have received shirts, pants, sweaters, socks all from my dad. All of the clothes I've received have been in great shape and look brand new. At school, I reuse almost everything. I have pencils that I have had since third grade, a hand full of erasers from kindergarten, and packs and packs of lined paper from when my parents were at school! My family has saved lots of money reusing clothes and school materials for years. And will be doing the same for many more years to come.

I feel this is something that happens more often than you think, my family usually keeps the bags that we get from the store, both plastic, and reusable bags that can be purchased. My mom saves some jars to hold what I think is apple juice vinegar, a large amount of storing sharp metal campfire sticks, which is now used for the mesocasim. We also kept all of my backpacks and reuse them when we want to go to the beach.and we usually find furniture by looking through facebook, and if one of us does not need it anymore we sell it or remake it for one of my siblings.
