Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

A Possible Solution

ENST

I’ve recently learned that my food consumption greatly contributes to my carbon footprint. The amount of work and resources it takes in order to get meat is so much yet we still continue. Did you know that every 2,000 calories a cow consumes, we only get about 60 calories back as beef? That’s ridiculously low and wasteful in plant foods. In my opinion, if I were to have the power to create policies, I’d make it so that it’d cost more tax to buy meat. This way, people will be more conscious of how much meat they may be getting. Along with this, I’d reduce the tax on plant based foods as a way of encouraging people to buy plant based foods more. Even though I would encourage more plant based foods, I still do believe meat is very important so I think just increas8nh the tax on it is better than forcing people not to eat meat or limit their consumption of meat. People will still be able to buy meat, it’d just cost them a bit more.
