Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Carbon Footprint - Food & Hunger Thoughts

What I learned about my dietary choices is that meat consumption creates a huge impact on your carbon footprint. There are huge copious amounts of produce being wasted on livestock because of the world's meat consumption. The waste of produce also leads to a lot of manure. If I could create a social policy on food, people would have limited amounts of food they can buy (depending on family size and health) and sell more vegetables and fruits more than meat. I would also make sure farms had limited amounts of livestock being reproduced. Extra/Unneeded food can be put towards those that are less fortunate. This could help bring equity to the world through food.

I also believe your answer. Us as humans do demand and eat too much meat when we really should go a little bit more down the vegetarian road. We all have to remember that we are OMNIVORES not CARNIVORES.
