Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Meat Industry’s impact on the environment

YCUL

According to LA times, one burger takes 660 gallons of water to make. This is very dangerous especially with the current drought we are experiencing in California. I believe that if people are able to slightly reduce their consumption of meat, it could make a great impact on our environment.

First, I wanted to say that this is a good point. We don't actually realize how much it takes to produce meat until we see the facts. According to peta.org It takes 1800 + gallons of water to produce one pound of meat. Where I live, in California, we have been experiencing dry winters with little rain and low precipitation. Because of the dry Winters that we have had, it has caused us to be like we are in a drought this year, and for years coming, and passed. In addition, meat is responsible for releasing greenhouse gasses such as methane, CO2, and nitrous oxide. All of these gasses contribute to climate change, more exclusively global warming. So yes, I agree that if people reduce their meat consumption and production, it will definitely impact our environment.
