What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?
925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

too many people waste food
one of the biggest problems on the topic of food waste is that too many people throw away food and this leads to enormous waste
I agree with u, in fact i belive that we must learn to understand the importance that food has for all of us and also think about the people who aren't lucky enough to have it.
I agree
I agree. Especially in the US not only do people give themselves too much helpings or make to much food that we don’t end up eating, but grocery stores or large producers of food- sometimes they are required to throw out foood just because grocery stores say its too late to take it. This wastes so much food.
Go behind a Dunkin’ Donuts in the USA and you’ll see how bad it is
I second everyone saying agree! It’s not uncommon for me to open a social media platform and see videos of employees dumping trays of untouched food into the trash after a long day of slow business. These larger corruption have an insane amount of excess food or products that are funneled back into the environment in negative ways (thrown away, contributing to large dumps or being burned. When it’s put in land fills not reused, the food often ends up rotting and emitting methane gas, further harming the environment). Within the past year or so, my family has joined a composting organization (ScrapDogs [I’m in Maine, I’m not sure how wide-spread ScrapDogs is in the world]) and we have seen a considerably decrease in full trash bags we sent out into the world. We now compost all scrap foods and paper towels, and in return, every month or so, we receive a small portion of compost from ScrapDogs.
This, at least for my family, has been really beneficial to our food waste numbers. Although our small compost habits don’t directly counter the huge quantities of wasted food sent out by large firms, doing our part trying to lessen our carbon footprint has been useful to our general community and our home.
I agree! Wasting food is a big problem that occurs and leads to enormous waste. Food waste also eventually ends up in landfills. The waste eventually decomposes and releases emissions, specifically methane emissions. Also, I hate seeing so much food being bought at stores and eventually seeing them go to waste because either people don’t eat the food or it goes bad.
Food waste is certainly a massive issue. Not only in households, but also with grocery stores and bakeries and such. Stores do throw out tons of food that they aren’t allowed to sell. I have participated in a program where food banks have partnerships with grocery stores. The stores collect the food they can’t sell anymore but is still fine to eat and donates it to food banks making food more accesible to people who maybe can’t afford to buy the food when it is on shelves. I think the implementation of more of these programs will help a lot in alleviating the issue of world hunger.
Ya i totally agree w u all. fast food companies and other popular and fast growing companies waste an enormous amount of food that could all be either donated to food pantries or could be eaten anyway as long as it isn’t rotten and will make someone sick if they ate the food.
Food- America is very focused on everything being presentable. Millions of pounds of food are discarded simply because they look different than others. The way we deal with food can absolutely improve if America just eats what isn’t completely spotless and unflawed. Lots of companies throw out masses of food at the end of the day instead of donating or selling at a reduced price.
Hello I agree with all of you !
Hi! I totally agree with you guys. I think we should buy more loose goods in supermarket. Thanks to this, we could buy only what we're going to eat. In our school, we can help ourselves, so we take only what whe are going to eat.
In our high school, we have a vegetable garden to product our own vegetables. We also have a compost for our garbage. The most important thing is to reduce our food waste.
Hi, I think we have to take care about our waste of food to and if we want to deepen this idea, we can use loose products.
