Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Composting Food Waste

Food waste is a huge issue. Throwing food in the trash instead of using other methods of disposal (like just eating it!), is a big contributor to our carbon footprint. One of these alternate disposal methods is composting. I noticed when calculating my carbon footprint that answering “yes” to the composting question reduced my footprint a good amount. I think encouraging more composting is a good way to help limit carbon emissions. Ways that could be done might be to offer rebates in stores on composting bins and even starting composting businesses to incentivize people. Obviously the best thing is to not waste food, but the waste that is produced should be composted.

I agree

I agree! Composting and getting rid of food waste is very beneficial. I also answered yes to that question because my family has chickens and they essentially do the same job, getting rid of food that would have been thrown out otherwise (and we almost never throw out leftover food now). Sometimes when my family goes out to dinner we wonder if restaurants do anything with their food waste other than throwing it out. I think it would be very useful for them to either compost the food or even sell it to farmers who could use it for fertilizer or to feed animals!
