Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Solving Hunger

This idea sounds a lot like it is from a dystopian book but I believe it is worth a shot and that the intentions are good. So to start, every person enters their weight every 6 months or so at a doctors office or some official place to be put into a computer system. That system knows how many people live in the same house as you, your age, height, weight, gender, etc. It then calculates how much you should be eating and will give you a list of things you can cook for any given meal. You can obviously look for chili if you want chili or tacos if you want tacos but essentially, it tells you how much food you will need so that everyone in your household gets the right amount of food to eat. Then you go to the grocery store and get the ingredients and so on. That makes sure that you aren’t making so much food that you have to throw a lot of it away (obviously it couldn’t completely eliminate waste). To make this idea even better is that within the grocery store there are dividers that seperate each specific thing from newest to oldest and you can take from which ever section you want to. The once that food has about 1-2 days left, it gets sent to a homeless shelter or to a family that isn’t as well off so they can have it. The food was going to get thrown out by the store so why not just reduce the amount of starving people in the world? This idea obviously has many flaws to it but it’s better than nothing.
