Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Eating local

Louann

Buying in the local market can help reduce the amount of CO2 emission since it doesn't do any long trip to arrive to your plate. It's also cheap and healthy most of the time.

Hi Louann, great point I totally agree. Buying products from your local market can help lower CO2 emissions in a great way. You see, when you buy a product from a distant country, there needs to be a way for the product to be transported. Throughout that transportation rather it be by car or plane, the CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions are significantly high. Rather than buying a product that is grown or made locally, the transportation emissions are bound to be much lower. According to my resource linked below, if you think about the emissions and gases released from transporting something from across the world to your plate, versus purchasing food from only a few miles away, the CO2 emissions from transportation are much lower. Another reason why it is pertinent that you by food local is because sometimes in the route of transportation a lot food gets damaged and rotten, leading to a rise in food waste. So If you were to purchase food locally from a farmers market for example, it is not being shipped and kept in transportation for an extended period of time, so not only is it not being damaged, but it's more fresh. Another point that supports buying local is the packaging impact. When you purchase goods from across the world there is a lot of packaging needed, and as of recently, it's mostly plastic. Plastic being the largest adversity to our environments health, more of it to transport goods should be eliminated. When you buy local, there is simply no need to use immense amounts of packaging if the good is traveling a shorter distance. So just buy local!
