Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

How wasted food affects others

"According to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization], 925 million people on the planet are hungry. That's nearly one-seventh of the world's population! ".. To put that into perspective, approximately TWELVE percent of the world's population is hungry. That saddens me since, in recent years, many individuals have been wasting food. A significant portion of the food produced contains preservatives or is genetically modified. I believe that as a species, we can and should do better when it comes to dealing with food. For instance, if you have fruits in a "fruit bowl" or in the refrigerator, don't let them rot because that would be a waste. It may not appear to be much, but if you eat that brown banana or that bruised apple, you will be doing a lot for the environment. Also according to https://foodprint.org/issues/the-problem-of-food-waste/, Approximately 40% of the food produced in the United States is wasted. 1 Many of the 125 to 160 billion pounds of food that is thrown out each year are perfectly edible and nutritious. Food is lost or wasted for a variety of reasons: harsh weather, processing issues, overproduction, and volatile markets lead food to be lost long before it reaches a grocery store, while overbuying, poor planning and uncertainty over labels and safety contribute to food waste in stores and at home. 2 Food waste is also quite expensive, costing the United States $218 billion each year. 3 Food that is not consumed places an unnecessary load on the environment by wasting vital resources such as water and farms. In a country where 12 percent of households are food insecure, 4. Reducing food waste by just 15% could feed more than 25 million people every year.
