Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food Waste In Relation to Climate Change

sosiBOD

I was invested in the subject of food waste when I discovered that food accounts for 10-30 percent of a household's carbon footprint. Production is accountable for 68% while transportation accounts for 5%. Looking at the Washington Post's article regarding food waste, I learned that 1 third of the food in the U.S. gets wasted, and how fixing this issue can impact the effects of climate change. Additionally, more than a third of food grown for eating never actually gets consumed, and is wasted, estimating about $408 billion worth in food, grown on U.S. farmlands with 4 trillion tons of water. Just think about those numbers! It's seriously something very scary to look at, knowing that most of us are the root of the issue. However, there are ways we can make changes to our daily lives and help create positive effects on climate change little by little. For example, add limitations to your consumption or shopping routines. Maybe take smaller portions when preparing food to prevent yourself from serving too large of a portion, and wasting it when you are done. Save your leftovers and start composting. Remember to buy only what you will eat, and eat what you buy. These changed can positively effect climate change in addition to your carbon footprint. The carbon footprint of U.S. food waste is actually greater than the carbon footprint of airline industries! The consequences of producing food that no one eats are immense. Globally, food waste is responsible for about 8 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions. Many issues have raised from these statistics of food waste, and there is plenty of other research and methods to help limit our waste and impact climate change! Let's try it!
