Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

How much energy is put into food

kbakerkb

Lots of energy goes into making, transporting, and processing food, especially with animals like cows and pigs. According to saveonenergy.com, the U.S. food system consumes 10.11 quadrillion Btu(British Thermal Units) each year. Also, it takes approximately 107,482 Btu to produce a single pound of beef, and about 42,992 Btu to produce a pound of pork. This means that in order to reduce our energy usage, and therefore our carbon footprint, we need to start eating less meat, and wasting less too.
