All of you have calculated your emissions and you have surely discovered the unexpectedly high impact of some of your behaviors (eating meat, flying to a sunny destination, etc.) on your total footprints.
Are there any behaviors that you are really willing to change or to improve for the sake of the environment? What challenges do you encounter or think you will encounter while trying to change these things? What help, support, and insights from others would make your life easier with these new behaviors?
Let's discuss these issues and make our pledges here!
Now It's Time for Action >
We Are in a Climate Emergency.
We are in a climate emergency. A survey was published in 2020 that included results from 15 major producer countries stating that by 2030, the amount of “global gas output” is predicted to increase the most between 2020 and 2040. It estimates that the global gas output is going to be about 71 percent higher than the 1.5°C limit established by the Paris Agreement, an international treaty for climate change, which is to limit global warming to less than 2°C. The estimated amount of coal would be 240 percent higher, the amount of oil 57 percent higher, and the amount of fossil fuels 110 percent higher. In order for this agreement to be kept, the production of fossil fuels must start declining now. We must also note that it is impossible for us to stop contributing to climate change altogether, as some of our daily needs require driving and using food concealed in plastic packaging. However, it is also important to note that we as individuals have an impact on climate change and should do whatever we can to reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses we emit into the atmosphere. Climate change is not going to get better, and we cannot let it continue getting out of hand.
Some things that we can do to help:
- turn off your lights, fans, and other appliances when not in use
- use blankets or space heaters as opposed to full house heaters (or vice versa when it’s hot)
- replace light bulbs with lower energy light bulbs
- use public transportation more frequently/ carpool
- eat less red meat
- spread the word, take action, be the first in your family, community, town, to step up.
