Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Why We Need to Waste Less Food

avkaBOD

Throughout the United States, people have wasted tons of food without even realizing it. The most common way people waste food is by buying new produce then not eating it for days until it becomes spoiled which results in them having to just throw it away. The percentage of food waste going into landfill is estimated to be 96%, which shows how possible nutrients are being wasted. Furthermore, the greenhouse gas methane is produced when food tries to break down in landfill. Methane is harmful towards our environment because it is a contributor towards Climate Change. This means our food waste greatly impacts Climate Change.

Ways to lessen our food waste:
- Eat leftovers!!!
  - Compost food scraps
- Only buy what you truly need and plan what to get beforehand
- If there are some foods that you have not used, donate them to food banks or other local food organizations that helps feed those in need
