Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Food Waste in America

SadoBOD

According to feedingamerica.org, approximately 108 billion pounds of food are wasted each year, in America alone. Nearly 40% of food made in America is wasted. So many people and kids in our country are starving, yet we still waste almost half of our food for no reason. From farmers to shippers to consumers, every level wastes food that could be going to people who need it. Not only does our food waste take away opportunities for people in need to get food, but food waste also affects our environment as well. In accordance with WWF(World Wildlife Fund), because so much American food is packaged and grown, the wasting of food affects the world we live in. The time and water it takes to package food is a huge one, especially if plastic is used. The world’s population is getting even bigger, which means that even more food will be wasted if people right now don’t intervene. If we all stop buying plastic-wrapped and unnecessary foods, maybe the wasting of food can stop and we can help the environment and other people in the process.
