Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

The small wastages we don't notice...

Greta Sharma

Many of us have food to feed ourselves on the day to day basis. We can open our pantries and refrigerators and see an abundance of food. This is not how it is for everyone on this world and even though we try to preach about “don’t waste food,” we still are not noticing the small things we do since we’re more privileged than most people. So many of us like to throw away our left-over food or throw away the fruits/vegetables from our school lunch. A slight change we can all make is to just save that food for later, offer it to someone that will actually eat it, or just not get it to begin with. We should start thinking about storing food properly, so we are likely to eat leftovers and not throw it away because it got rottened. These are the most common-sense things. But doing things like figuring out how to incorporate the yolk of an egg into another dish so you don’t throw it away. Or not cutting the edges off your sandwich; if you do, instead of tossing them you could blend them to make bread crumbs. There are so many small actions you can take that will affect so many other people for the better.
