Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

How to stop world hunger

Charles Seashore

Humans already produce enough food to stop world hunger, so our problem is not that some people are eating too much, but food isn’t going to everyone. So instead of working so hard to make and grow food, we could instead expend some of that energy to distributing it to everyone.

World hunger is mainly caused by poverty. The amount of money distributed through the world is very unequal. The rich keep get richer and the poor are getting poorer. The lack of resources and money in developing countries means that people cannot afford the land or resources for growing crops and nutritious food. If poverty wasn't common in developing countries then the percentage of world hunger would go down but as the world becomes more advanced. Jobs are going to become very available creating more money and that means less poverty.

A third or 2.5 billion tons of food is wasted every year globally! To eliminate or at least reduce world hunger is to stop wasting food. Not only does this stop world hunger but it also reduces methane put into the atmosphere. When food is wasted it breaks down and releases carbon emissions. To kill world hunger we must stop wasting food.
