Food & Hunger

What did you learn about dietary choices from using the footprint calculator? Now imagine that you could translate what you learned into an effective societal policy on food- what would it be? And how would this policy effect the need to alleviate world hunger?

925 million people on earth do not have enough to eat according to the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organization]. That's almost 1 in 7 inhabitants of our planet!

Why is world hunger a problem and what can we do to change it

Humans throughout the world already produce enough food to feed everyone that is hungry, so why is world hunger a problem? First, the amount of food and money being distributed throughout the world is unfair. People who are rich get richer, and people who are poor get poorer. This causes many people eating more than enough, and others barely eating anything. We can stop this by eating an appropriate amount of food and distributing food around the world to poorer countries, where the country isn't insanely well developed and rich, like the United States.

I totally agree. Another thing that contributes to the problem is the amount of grain we feed our animals. If we stopped eating beef as a whole, many things would be better. We could turn that grain into food for third world countries, as well as the carbon emissions would go down simply by not farming as much cattle. Cattle drink about 45 billion gallons of water per day and 135 billion pounds of food. Just think about what we could do with all of that food and water if we didn’t put it into growing cattle.
