Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Ways to Reuse

Reducing the amount of plastic and non-recyclable materials in the environment is crucial. In 2021 it was reported that over 300 million tons of plastic is produced every year and more than 14 million tons of that plastic end up in the ocean each year. This is a huge problem for marine life and life in general because animals, thinking it’s food, will consume the plastic and die. There are many different ways that people can help reduce the amount of trash that ends up in the ocean and other ecosystems. One easy way to reuse plastic is to make eco-bricks. Eco-bricks are essentially plastic bottles filled to the brim with more plastic. You can make them by finding trash on the beach and stuffing that trash into a used plastic water bottle. After they are made, eco-bricks can be used to build things such as play parks, furniture, and other structures. They can also act as insulators in homes because of their tightly packed insulating plastics. Another effective method to reuse is to cut up old clothes or fabric and transform them into tote bags that can be used instead of plastic bags. This not only minimizes waste but also allows you to reuse your old clothes. Lastly, if you come across items that are in good condition but you no longer need them and are unsure how to repurpose them, consider donating them to charitable organizations. This is a great way to give back to your community while also being mindful of the environment. Overall, even though recycling is a positive way to lessen the amount of waste on our planet, reusing materials is an even more effective approach to conserving resources and reducing pollution. So instead of discarding items, consider finding ways to reuse them.
