Extreme Weather

In the Northern Hemisphere in 2017 and 2018 brought several destructive hurricanes to the shores of North America, the Caribbean, and throughout the Pacific rim. Such extreme weather events are predicted to get more common and more severe with increasing climate change.

Several participating classes in the ISCFC were or are in the path of these storms and we hope for the best for them, their families and communities.

We would love to hear from students affected directly and indirectly by extreme weather events, and also any students who have been following the news this summer.

What are your thoughts about the connection between climate change and extreme weather events? Has this hurricane season increased your concern about climate change or not? Do you think that US citizens and residents (and others in the region) will take climate change more seriously now?

A busy and deadly hurricane season

After Hurricanes Irma and Maria, another storm is battering the region. Tropical Storm Nate is expected to make landfall in New Orleans as a hurricane by Saturday. It has already  killed 22 people in Central America including 15 in Nicaragua and seven in Costa Rica. Officials in Costa Rica said 15 people are also missing. I sympathize with everyone in the affected areas and pray that their country will recover quickly.
The Cayman Islands are under Tropical Storm conditions and have been receiving heavy rains, but we are fine.

I agree that this hurricane season has been one of the worst. My state was hit by Hurricane Harvey, and the aftermath was horrific. Everywhere you looked you would see piles of things that were ruined because of flooding. Afterwards, there is no place to put the excess trash so landfills that are not government approved are all around the city.

My city as well was hit by Harvey. This tragic event caused so much devastation here. On almost every street you would see piles of debris in front of houses. What I wonder is what are they going to dot with all this trash..?
