In the Northern Hemisphere in 2017 and 2018 brought several destructive hurricanes to the shores of North America, the Caribbean, and throughout the Pacific rim. Such extreme weather events are predicted to get more common and more severe with increasing climate change.
Several participating classes in the ISCFC were or are in the path of these storms and we hope for the best for them, their families and communities.
We would love to hear from students affected directly and indirectly by extreme weather events, and also any students who have been following the news this summer.
What are your thoughts about the connection between climate change and extreme weather events? Has this hurricane season increased your concern about climate change or not? Do you think that US citizens and residents (and others in the region) will take climate change more seriously now?
Extreme Weather >
End of the world?

After the recent Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Harvey, devastating flooding and destruction that went along with both of these as well as the fires going on in California; many people were saying how it seems as though the end of the world is coming. However, the extreme weather we have been experiencing has been traced back to what we've been doing to our planet and the climate changes and global warming. The damage we have done is blowing up in our faces and we are now truly staring to see the effects. The way we treat our planet is extremely important and it is clear to us now that we need to do some major changes, now!
I completely agree. We need to take action right now to restore our planet and stop polluting Earth. I also believe that we need to begin educating people much more on global warming and climate change because some people are not aware of the underlying issues that make natural disasters far worse that we can help to change. This article, http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/earth/hurr … imate.html explains further on why global warming makes hurricanes much more dangerous, specifically because sea levels are rising from melting icebergs which makes flooding much more likely.
Do you think that, eventually, if we do not change the way we treat Earth for the better, it could potentially end our planet and we will cause our own race to go extinct?
I also completely agree, after seeing the devastation of Hurricane Harvey firsthand, I believe the world needs to reform their ways and take care of or earth in order to stop the destruction. according to http://www.ecy.wa.gov/climatechange/ext … r_more.htm the carbon we add into the atmosphere creates more energy causing extreme weather. If everyone can lessen the amount of carbon they put into the atmosphere, it can make a big impact.
I definitely agree with you. I also think that the hurricanes (or other extreme weather)were caused indirectly by the actions of humans. The extreme weather was caused by climate change which is the result of global warming. Global warming is caused by human activities.
It is important for people to know about the effect of global warming. Some people today still believe global warming is nonsense and they need to be educated. There are a lot of research and experiments related to the negative effect of global warming as well as proving its existence. According to NASA: Global climate change, the global temperature increases 1.7 Fahrenheit each year since 1880 and the Arctic ice decrease 13.3 percent every decade. Those are some scary facts. If people learn about the negative influence of releasing massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the air, they will reduce their carbon footprints. When everyone on earth began to become aware of how vital it is to protect th e environment and start to reduce their carbon footprints, I believe there will be less extreme weather in the next few decades to come.
I agree that the increase in the number of major hurricanes is a result of climate change. If we don’t start making a difference now, then it will lead to the end of our species along with many others.
