Extreme Weather

In the Northern Hemisphere in 2017 and 2018 brought several destructive hurricanes to the shores of North America, the Caribbean, and throughout the Pacific rim. Such extreme weather events are predicted to get more common and more severe with increasing climate change.

Several participating classes in the ISCFC were or are in the path of these storms and we hope for the best for them, their families and communities.

We would love to hear from students affected directly and indirectly by extreme weather events, and also any students who have been following the news this summer.

What are your thoughts about the connection between climate change and extreme weather events? Has this hurricane season increased your concern about climate change or not? Do you think that US citizens and residents (and others in the region) will take climate change more seriously now?

Extreme weather is scary and can be very dangerous. 2017 was a big year for wildfires in British Columbia, Canada. It was the worst wildfire season in BC history. 2017 was another big year hurricanes in the US. It caused a lot of deaths and destruction. Weather patterns are confusing. They cannot be controlled. Lets say it could be snowing and it brings 30+ centimetres and in the affection it reaches +15 degrees and causes massive flooding on the streets and homes. In some places where it's very hot may see heat waves and could cause droughts. This is very bad because if there is no water we can't survive and there will be no water for the plants to grow. We need to take action now and fast to save our cities and communities before it's to late.

Do you have any ideas on how we could take action to help fix these problems? How long do you think till it will be to late to fix the problem with the lack of water?
