Extreme Weather

In the Northern Hemisphere in 2017 and 2018 brought several destructive hurricanes to the shores of North America, the Caribbean, and throughout the Pacific rim. Such extreme weather events are predicted to get more common and more severe with increasing climate change.

Several participating classes in the ISCFC were or are in the path of these storms and we hope for the best for them, their families and communities.

We would love to hear from students affected directly and indirectly by extreme weather events, and also any students who have been following the news this summer.

What are your thoughts about the connection between climate change and extreme weather events? Has this hurricane season increased your concern about climate change or not? Do you think that US citizens and residents (and others in the region) will take climate change more seriously now?

Extreme Weather

In the Bay Area we have experienced some major effects of global warming first hand.  On April 17, we experienced snow and hail in the middle of spring. This has definitely raised my concern about climate change because we are used to the weather we experience. It will be a challenge to adapt if the weather keeps changing like this. I think people should take this more seriously because it is something that is happening throughout the world and can affect everyone.

I agree that the extreme weather is serious, but what small steps can people take in their day to day lives to reduce the amount of carbon in our atmosphere. For example people like me who have no option but to drive to school everyday and who doesn't have much control over my carbon foot print what small things can I do to reduce my carbon in order to help global warming and changes in temperature?

There are many things people can do to reduce the amount of carbon they contribute to the atmosphere. If you have to drive to school, carpooling is a great thing you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. Another thing you can do is to make sure to turn off the lights in your home during the day and turn off lights when you walk out of a room. You can turn off the heat or air conditioning in your home when you leave. You can also recycle. Even the smallest things can help! A great way to reduce carbon is to make sure other people are aware of it's effects and ways to help. Basically, be mindful that the things you do can affect the atmosphere.
