Extreme Weather

In the Northern Hemisphere in 2017 and 2018 brought several destructive hurricanes to the shores of North America, the Caribbean, and throughout the Pacific rim. Such extreme weather events are predicted to get more common and more severe with increasing climate change.

Several participating classes in the ISCFC were or are in the path of these storms and we hope for the best for them, their families and communities.

We would love to hear from students affected directly and indirectly by extreme weather events, and also any students who have been following the news this summer.

What are your thoughts about the connection between climate change and extreme weather events? Has this hurricane season increased your concern about climate change or not? Do you think that US citizens and residents (and others in the region) will take climate change more seriously now?

CALI WEATHER

in my opinion, climate change has more to do with what humans do and extreme weather events has to do more with nature .For example, we can't control the rain or this heat but we can control the co2 levels, we can ride a bike to school instead of driving there or we can carpool with a friend. we cant control  tornadoes or wind. its out of our control. that's the difference.

It's true that humans affect co2 levels. However, along with that, humans actually affect the weather as well. Based on the European environment agency, Human activity that burns fossil fuels affects greenhouse gases, aerosols, and cloudiness. Then greenhouse gases and aerosols  affect climate by altering incoming solar radiation and out going infrared radiation that are apart of earth's energy balance.

I agree with your statement.  The reason climate change is occurring is because of humans releasing CO2 into the atmosphere.  Extreme weather has always occurred, but CO2 is making it occur more often.  This could eventually lead to a very deadly hurricane or something even worse.
