Extreme Weather

In the Northern Hemisphere in 2017 and 2018 brought several destructive hurricanes to the shores of North America, the Caribbean, and throughout the Pacific rim. Such extreme weather events are predicted to get more common and more severe with increasing climate change.

Several participating classes in the ISCFC were or are in the path of these storms and we hope for the best for them, their families and communities.

We would love to hear from students affected directly and indirectly by extreme weather events, and also any students who have been following the news this summer.

What are your thoughts about the connection between climate change and extreme weather events? Has this hurricane season increased your concern about climate change or not? Do you think that US citizens and residents (and others in the region) will take climate change more seriously now?

Animals

During extreme weather conditions, animals cannot easily leave the areas in the way that humans do. This can damage the food chain, which in turn, can directly affect the food that humans are also receiving.

Extreme weather can also effect plant life, effecting animals, and the carbon cycle.

Yes, I think you’re right: animals are in danger because of pollution and climate change. Not only the fauna is at risk, but also the flora is in a precarious situation. Both have to get used to the new climatic conditions, which are, however, too rapid to adapt. According to the Swiss government (https://www.bafu.admin.ch/bafu/it/home/ … breve.html), efforts to preserve biodiversity (diversity among animals and plants) have not held back the decline. We also need step to step to intensify our efforts because the loss of biodiversity would complicate the existence of the human being.

It’s true that animals feel bad because “humans” pollute and change the climete but now is too late for notice it... I don’t know what we can do for do a difference, but I hope that animals will adapt to new life conditions, but I hope also that humans improve their habits

mariana_ciriani

that’s true, sometimes you can find bees in the winter, just because there were some hot days and they thought spring had come

Not only do animals suffer plants do too. If we continue to do this type of damage to our environment then not only do the animals and plants suffer then we will too.

Hi. I agree that extreme weather can impact animals and other living things. Yes, it is not easy for them to migrate somewhere else. Some animals have special features where they can't live in certain ecosystems. Such as a polar bear if too much ice melts and there are no ice caps it can't migrate to Africa and for many reasons. Africa is a hot place, a lot of vegetation and the polar bear could not blend in with certain elements so it needs a certain habitat to survive. Everything goes the same way for plants. Let's go back to the polar bear's habitat barely any vegetation is there just because of the living conditions. The fact that global warming is also taking place just makes environments more of a dramatic turning pike. More and more animals become endangered because of illegal hunting and global warming itself. So, change needs to happen now.

The humans are the most invasive animals of the planet Earth.

I agree that we are also harming plants and animals by our disgraceful actions.

catherinek

Wow! I never thought of the fact that animals cant escape natural disasters and declining habitat conditions as easily as humans can. This is a really good point

Imogen

I agree. What can we do that will help these animals so they don’t get their homes destroyed

Jaden H USA

Yah, i also agree they were technacly here first and its unfair that we came here after, took over there homes and killed them off. It makes me want to do any think i can to help them.
