Extreme Weather

In the Northern Hemisphere in 2017 and 2018 brought several destructive hurricanes to the shores of North America, the Caribbean, and throughout the Pacific rim. Such extreme weather events are predicted to get more common and more severe with increasing climate change.

Several participating classes in the ISCFC were or are in the path of these storms and we hope for the best for them, their families and communities.

We would love to hear from students affected directly and indirectly by extreme weather events, and also any students who have been following the news this summer.

What are your thoughts about the connection between climate change and extreme weather events? Has this hurricane season increased your concern about climate change or not? Do you think that US citizens and residents (and others in the region) will take climate change more seriously now?

Extreme Weather will soon affect everyone!

Although some people may feel that extreme weather is not a concern for them, if we continue down this path it will affect everyone. The California wildfires and the cold spell in the Midwest are perfect examples. These extreme weather patterns will become more frequent. Remember, not only humans are hurt in the extreme cold! Animals like pond fish and house pets are not able to relocate like humans are. The strength of storms and hurricanes is rising due to CO2 emissions. We still have time to turn this around! Make sure to get involved with groups that support policies to help our planet, and stop this dangerous increase in extreme weather.

This is very true, we have already seen this in recent years. Usually, there was a hurricane or natural disasters every few years, now there is one every half a year or less.

In the place I live in some places are already getting effected and some already are having floods, tornadoes, extreme winds, wildfires, and etc. So this is really important

I agree that everyone needs to be worried about extreme weather. In our area, multiple fires have burned thousands of acres in the last couple years. In Northern California, we used to only worry about earthquakes, but the amount of harmful fires is increasing due to drought-affected land and intense heat.

I agree that although some aren't being effected right now, in time the effects of climate change could reach such a point that it becomes irreversible, unleashing an irreversible chain reaction causing such extreme weather events that (according to Greta Thunberg) could wipe out our whole civilization.
