Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Wastewater Gardens

There are a lot of things in this world that humans find distasteful, but one that is quite prominent is the toilet and its contents. The toilet is a mechanism that has saved countless people from having to smell and look at excretions, but is actually quite harmful to the environment. The excess from toilets often contaminates many things like oceans and other animals. Mixtures in wildlife contaminate water for animals and the areas they live in. In the oceans contaminated by this excess mixture can become dead zones were fish and corals are damaged and often times killed. Another problem with modern day toilets is that they waste a lot of fresh water which is a limited resource on Earth, considering that only 3% of water on Earth is actually fresh.
Now is a toilet really worth that, maybe, but what if I told you there was a way to clean this water so that we could reuse it? Well there is a way by using the detoxifying properties of plants. Basically, the plants take in the water and clean it then the water is put out clean and reusable. Some plants that successfully c leaned water were papyrus, lotus, and some other plants. The founder, Mark Nelson has gone out of his way to show how clean and safe the process is. I think this is a great idea, although a bit gross, it is a very creative and environmentally friendly idea. Do you think this is a good idea? If not, why?
