Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Recycling

Hi my name Shela. I'm a sophomore at Oakland High School. I think that everyone should recycle because it's a great way to save the environment! Recycling is FUN!You can recycle by saving reusable water bottles, throwing away trash, and have a recycling bin in your house! And Remember to throw away TRASH!

I think recycling is fun too! It's a great way to help reduce trash. Throwing away the trash and having a recycling bin is a great idea. Great Job!

I agree with you that recycling is fun! Seeing paper get reused over and over and still be clean is a nice feeling. Recycling can be used for many ways too and it's a really nice idea. I also believe that everybody should at least have a recycling bin in our houses and it'd make a great impact on being eco-friendly!

Shela recycling this is really good! The environment needs this because it can be reuse and that saves a lot instead of making more.

I definitely agree that recycling is great for the environment and fun at the same time! However, you don't necessarily need to throw away everything away. You can put them to use by saving them for projects or making them into arts and crafts. You can use bottles, boxes, jars, glass materials, newspapers, scraps of papers, buttons, and so much more! You can even use old clothing to cut and sew, making cute hand bags, pouches, jewelry bags, and pillows!
Recycling is a simple way of reducing our carbon footprint, but I will admit that it is tough to remember. Also, sometimes there is not a recycling bin around for you to use. According to http://www.greenwaste.com/recycling-stats, "less than one percent of all plastics products are recycled in the U.S. Americans throw away 25,000,000 plastic beverage bottles every hour!" In addition, 2,000 pounds of paper we recycle will save 3.5 cubic yards of landfill; 17 thirty foot (pulp) trees; 7,000 gallons of water; 380  gallons of oil; and 4100 kwh of energy! Recycling 2,000 pounds of paper will also decrease air pollution by sixty pounds.

I agree with you. This is where you might expect me to overwhelm you with numbers, figures and facts that are supposed to scare or guilt you into recycling because if you don't the world will end. While it's true that there are numerous downsides to NOT recycling, I like to focus on the positive. So let's discuss recycling benefits.
Environmental Recycling Benefits and Facts
information supplied by: National Recycling Coalition

Recycling and composting diverted nearly 70 million tons of material away from landfills and incinerators in 2000, up from 34 million tons in 1990-doubling in just 10 years. one world

Every ton of paper that is recycled saves 17 trees.

The energy we save when we recycle one glass bottle is enough to light a light bulb for four hours.

Recycling benefits the air and water by creating a net reduction in ten major categories of air pollutants and eight major categories of water pollutants.

In the U.S., processing minerals contributes almost half of all reported toxic emissions from industry, sending 1.5 million tons of pollution into the ai r and water each year. Recycling can significantly reduce these emissions.

It is important to reduce our reliance on foreign oil. Recycling helps us do that by saving energy.

Manufacturing with recycled materials, with very few exceptions, saves energy and water and produces less air and water pollution than manufacturing with virgin materials.

It takes 95% less energy to recycle aluminum than it does to make it from raw materials. Making recycled steel saves 60%, recycled newspaper 40%, recycled plastics 70%, and recycled glass 40%. These savings far outweigh the energy created as by-products of incineration and landfilling.

In 2000, recycling resulted in an annual energy savings equal to the amount of energy used in 6 million homes (over 660 trillion BTUs). In 2005, recycling is conservatively projected to save the amount of energy used in 9 million homes (900 trillion BTUs).
Lots of information, huh? ANd the thing is, I've barely even scratched the surface. So to those who do recycle, recycle on! And be aware of the good you are doing for your environment!
