Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Water Bottles for the Soccer Team

rebeccapolasek

I can't lie, I used to waste a lot of plastic water bottles during soccer season. I would place about two bottles in my bag for every practice, but half the time I would only drink one bottle. The other bottles would pile up in my soccer bag and go to waste. I would just pour them out after a month, and I would throw them away. Now I recycle my used plastic water bottles. If I don't open a water bottle during soccer practice, I put it back in the fridge when I get home for someone else to drink. I now use plastic water jugs instead of water bottles because they are reusable and hold a much bigger amount of water, but sometimes I don't have enough time to fill up a water jug before practice. I don't want to waste so many plastic water bottles anymore, and I have come up with a solution to that. My family likes to drink orange juice a lot. When we finish the orange juice, I clean out that container and use it as my water jug! I can use that container for more than a week, and I just recycle the container when I'm done with it! This way I am now repurposing and recycling th e orange juice container. All the girls on my soccer team are starting to do the same thing so they don't waste too many water bottles either. According to www.banthebottle.net, around 50 billion water bottles are wasted each year, but only 22 billion are recycled. Now that I'm reusing and recycling my orange juice containers for soccer practice, I'm cutting back the amount of water bottles I waste each year for soccer. If I do use any plastic water bottles, I try my hardest to remember to recycle them now.

I totally agree with your opinion on this subject! So many water bottles are wasted each year. The average person consumes 167 water bottles a year, and over time the amount of plastic really adds up. I think that it is great that you reuse orange juice bottles to use for soccer practice and I do think that it will greatly reduce your carbon footprint. If you reuse water bottles and containers, you will have a carbon footprint that is 8 kg of CO2 less than not reusing your water bottles or containers. I also think that it is great that you shared this creative idea with your soccer team and they have started to do it to! I think that if more people knew the impact of the use of all of the waste of adding to our carbon footprint, they would reduce the amount of plastic bottles used, and with the plastic that is used, this will cause us to remember to recycle more!
