Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Lawn Clippings

marycatel-usa

A lot of times after we cut our lawns we throw away the clippings. We do not need to do this. Lawn clippings can be left in the grass, and can be used as fertilizer. Grass clippings are a plentiful, free source of nutrients. By leaving clippings on the lawn after mowing, you're adding nutrients, such as nitrogen to the soil and stimulating biological activity. Research has shown that leaving short clippings can supply up to 40 percent of a lawn's annual fertilizer needs. If you find that your clippings are thick, wet and smothering the lawn, it's best to rake them up and compost them. Also, if you use a lawn mower that turns the clippings into fine bits, much of your fertilization is done when you mow.
