Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Landfills an Even Greater Reason to Recycle

brennawusa

I recently came across Harmony Enterprise´s web page, and I read a few of the statistics that they have on recycling. One of these statistics said that in the U.S. there are about 251 million tons of trash in landfills throughout the country. I have never seen a landfill firsthand, but I can imagine the monstrosity us humans have caused them to become. We can make excuses for many of the ecological problems we face, but these landfills are the without a doubt the cause of human hands. There is nothing we can do about the trash that is already piled up in these landfills, but there are many things that we can do to avoid adding more trash to them. One of the easiest ways to stop adding trash into landfills is by recycling. Many facilities and communities have systems for recycling your paper and plastic, however the action of actually recycling is up to us. One of my teachers recently presented an idea to promote our recycling at school. The idea was that if pictures of landfills were taped to trashcans then maybe we would try harder to recycle. I immediately thought to m yself that maybe that could work. I know that if I saw a landfill every time I was about to throw something away I would feel guilty about adding something that could be recycled into the trashcan. We shouldn’t need to be reminded of the bad that can happen in order for us to do something good, but if a reminder could potentially save our earth than I think it is worth a try. Whether or not pictures of landfills end up being posted on the trashcans in our classroom, I will try to recycle more often knowing that I am doing the world a favor.
