Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Plastic Bags

lena-k

There are 100 billion plastic grocery bags thrown away each year in America. See http://www.inspirationgreen.com/plastic-bag-stats.html for more statistics about plastic bags. There are many ways plastic bags can be re-purposed. I know from personal experience my family reuses plastic grocery bags to clean up the cat's waste. They can also be used to clean up after your dog. Plastic bags are just handy to have around, because they can serve many purposes.

That's a wonderful point of information, plastic bag is a global issue, also in China, the plastic bag was been produced and threw any way, so I am so glad to use your personal experience to fix some problem in real life , but I still think about what's the goal of using plastic bag.

I totally agree with that, Plastic bag is very bad for environment, we should prevent this situation

I completely agree with you! My family also re-purposes plastic bags not only to clean up our puppy's waste, but also to put in trash cans throughout our house! It is resourceful to re-use plastic bags because doing this can save money and it can also save the earth!

Your article mentions the toxins that plastic bags soak up and the danger to marine life. I think that we should go a step further and begin to stop using plastic bags altogether. Grocery stores have the option of using paper bags, and when you are done with them they can be recycled. Grocery stores also sell reusable grocery bags for a cheap price. Once you buy a few, those will last you for years, save you money, and help reduce carbon emissions that come from plastic bag production. The uses for these reusable bags also don't end with grocery shopping.

I agree! My family reuses our grocery bags by using it for our mini trash cans.

Plastic bags are very useful and should be reused! My cousin just had a baby and we use plastic bags to wrap up dirty diapers. I think if you use plastic bags we should try to reuse them. If you decide it is better to avoid plastic bags altogether I can see how that could also be very beneficial.  Many places like Krogers sell reusable bags that you can use while grocery shopping.

I definitely agree! There are so many plastic bags wasted around the world. After going grocery shopping, my family saves plastic bags and uses them for other things such as for our mini trash cans, or as you said, picking up pet waste. I also think that when going to the grocery store, you should also bring your own reusable bag from home so as to not waste as many plastic bags.

I agree that plastic bags are a big problem in America. My family reuses plastic bags by packing our lunches in them. Lately my family has been bringing our own bag to grocery store, so we don’t have as many plastic bags lying around the house. I think more people should stop getting the plastic bags from the stores. It’s a simple solution to people having an abundance of plastic bags.

I agree! I think it would be way easier and better for the environment in many ways if you stopped buying plastic bags from the grocery store. Some stores may not even offer you a choice of paper or plastic so it is always best to bring some of your own reusable bags to carry your groceries. This is very efficient and way better for the environment.

I agree that plastics bags are a rapidly growing problem in America. My family uses plastics bags for anything and everything from food storage, packing lunches, or storing Christmas lights. Realizing that our baggie usage was getting out of control, my family has begun to use reusable plastic baggies in an effort to lower our carbon footprint. However, 2 million paper baggies are still being used every minute around the world (http://www.reuseit.com/facts-and-myths/ … ndemic.htm), which is a huge waste. This contributes to the 32 million tons of plastic waste produced annually. Plastic baggies are bad for the environment in many ways, but their greatest negative effect is in the ocean. The United Nations Environment Program estimates an average of 46,000 pieces of plastic floating in every square mile of ocean. These pieces get caught in marine animals and wash up on beaches around the world. Plastic also takes about 500 years to degrade, which negatively effects the carbon footprint. Also. as the demand for plastic bags increases,  the production rate will also have to increase which will increase the global carbon footprint.
If more families shopped with reusable grocery bags or bought reusable plastic baggies to store food, would the global carbon footprint decrease?
