Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Grocery Bags

annmariepiek

The average family in the United States goes grocery shopping once every week. Some people in Japan go grocery shopping every one or two days. If a family goes grocery shopping once every week, getting 5 plastic grocery bags each time, they are using 240 plastic bags every year. We should buy reusable bags to take to the grocery store to keep us from using 240 plastic grocery bags every year. Some recycling programs don't even take these plastic bags, so it would be extremely resourceful to just refrain from using them all together.

Some parts of the world don't even let stores use plastic grocery bags because they are so bad for the environment. I agree that getting reusable bags is very important, but if you can't, at least ask for paper bags.

I completely agree. Everyone should be using reusable bags at this point.

In my city, we have to pay to use paper bags and plastic bags are banned in most stores. People are much more likely to use reusable bags at the store.

I agree fully. Since plastic bags are banned in most stores, a lot of people rely on paper bags. Yes, paper bags are better then plastic but it is still an unnecessary to waste the paper if you can bring a reusable bag. This preserves the environment and saves you money.

My family only uses reusable bags, and when we forget, we get paper, also because plastic isn't an option. When we have to many paper bags, we actually take them back to the store and they reuse them, or we use them to hold extra recycling.

Plastic bags can make a big difference, so banning them will also. I think plastic bags should be banned everywhere, to promote the use of reusable bags.

I totally agree that we should all be using reusable bags when grocery shopping or really any shopping in general. In my city we have to pay for bags if we don't bring our own, but the fee for each bag is so small that I don't think people really care and they just get them anyway. We would save so much plastic and paper if everyone brought their own bags.  Also the carbon and toxins that are let out into the air when we make the plastic bags would go away!

since the fees for plastic bags are so small whenever my family forgets to bring our own bags we just pay for the paper bags. But if stores made the fees for the paper bags a little bit more people would probably to bring their own bags more or at least go get their bags if they forgot them.

In my city, plastic bags have been banned for years, and you have to buy paper bags, so there is an incentive to use reusable bags.

Many stores in my city have also made paper and plastic bags something you have to pay for, but they have also made reusable bags very cheap, sometimes under a dollar. I think this is a good idea because it encourages people that have before hesitated on buying a reusable bag to get one as now they cost less than a bus fare.

I think that plastic bags are a necessity and should not be limited at all. Who cares if animals die? It's important for people to understand priorities. Bagging groceries is way more important than any animal's life.
