Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Something you may not have thought about...

I am currently taking the class, Honors Geometry, and my teacher has assigned us a Rube Goldberg project to incorporate parts of Geometry to real world uses and examples. Part of our project is a sustainability aspect, we have to incorporate something that makes our project sustainable or teaches some lesson regarding sustainability. My group has decided to not buy anything from the store and use materials around our homes, although you may be thinking this is just using materials like leftover cardboard, which is a great way to reuse materials! This is not like that, my family happens to be in a area where there is a very large amount of wildlife and open area. Whenever we see a tree that has fallen down or a branch that has broken off of a tree, we receive permission from the land owner to take the wood. It is then used to make things like my Rube Goldberg project, already my family has made many items that we use daily from things like fallen trees. You might be wondering what types of things someone could make out of wood that you use daily, but there is a countless  number. It could be as basic as something that holds the salt and pepper, or as complicated as a wine barrel. These are all things that my family has used this material for, and although not all families have this opportunity, try and be creative! Many people would not have thought of using fallen trees as a resource for building projects, maybe there is something you have around your house that you have not thought of before. Just take a moment and think of anything you could possibly be doing to reuse materials in your daily life, remember, even the smallest thing makes a huge difference.
