Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Paper is a resource that is constantly being thrown away. A good way to reduce the amount of paper we use is by writing on both sides of a sheet of paper. 2 pages' work would all be transferred onto one sheet of paper.  Other things may be helpful too, such as using leftover paper as a divider in a notebook or a binder.

I highly agree Kheshawn. Many times people will throw away paper that can be reused on the other side, but they decide to use two papers. I would recommend avoid using paper, by typing documents and submitting them digitally. At Bishop O'Dowd I'm glad that our teachers try to give us online activities that we can submit electronically to save paper. Overall this can reduce the amount of paper we use substantially.

We can also use double-sided printers to print out many sheets of paper. Instead of using transferring ink while writing on paper, we can use a pencil and use both sides of the paper. If you don't use half of a sheet of paper, you can save it for next time instead of taking out a brand new sheet of paper every time.

I agree with J.P, but I think that other schools across the nation, as well as our own, should convert to only laptops in a school setting. The amount of handouts teachers give to their students annually is an average of 12600 per teacher. Receiving project guidelines and submitting final products via computer would help conserve the amount of paper schools across the country would use.

I agree with you.  Unfortunately people don't do it.

I agree with you Kheshawn. It's a huge waste and using less paper would save a lot of forests

According to Larry West, environmental issues expert, "Recycling one ton of paper can save 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space and 4,000 kilowatts of energy-enough to power the average U.S. home for six months and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one metric ton of carbon equivalent (MTCE)" (http://environment.about.com/od/recycli … -Paper.htm). Reusing and recycling paper can also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

i agree with using both sides of the paper that way we don't waste so much paper at once like we usually we do, but like our school using laptops is also a good idea because we aren't using much paper because we usually do everything online. But i agree with using both sides of a paper.
