Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Reuse & Repurpose >

Sometimes Inconveinence

I am all for reusing, recycling, and repurposing items we have used up.  For example, I compost my food waste at home and use leftover water to water plants.  Also, I reuse certain appliances, such as boxes and containers, to be used in a different way, and I try to use everything until it is no longer operable, which at that point, I would properly dispose of it.  However, sometimes, reusing, recycling, and repurposing can be an inconvenience.  For example, lets say I drink a 355mL can of soda at a party.  After drinking it, I could use it to make into a light camping stove or a bird feeder.  However, it is an inconvenience to me because now, I have to bring it home and figure out a way to reuse it.  It is much easier to clean out and recycle the can where it can be used to make another soda can.  If it clean and green, I think recycling an item is fine, but I am certainly open to reusing and repurposing items if convenient.

I agree with you Logan that reusing materials can be really inconvenient. I think that especially with your aluminum can example, recycling is about as good for the environment as reusing it. According to this source http://www.popularmechanics.com/science … /4291566/, recycling an aluminum can is 97% more energy efficient than making a new one, which is pretty close to the 100% energy efficiency savings you would have by reusing it. I think recycling the can is pretty green and clean.

Hi! Im from Guatemala and I completely agree that recycling can become an inconvinience. Here in order to recycle we have to take the trash to certain recycling factories meaning that you have to accumulate all for a while and then drive it over yourself. The tediousness of this process discourages people, therefore there are not a lot of people here in Guatemala that recycle their waste.

Nice work Logan! Recycling, composing, and fighting for sustainability can be a tremendous inconvenience and I admit that I have thrown something away that could have been recycled many times just as a matter of convenience. Continuing with the motif of inconvenience, "Conserve Energy Future" created an article called "What is Littering?" which stated that half of the items littered are cigarette butts. If a person is in a rural area and smokes a cigarette, he or she is likely to throw it on the ground because it is very inconvenient to carry around a ember filled chemical chamber! This is just one example of a clear-cut inconvenience presented by sustainability. I think that in order to solve the issues of inconvenience, people must be educated on the negative effects of littering, so they can make a more informed choice.
