Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Reuse Water

While it may not sound all that appealing, if you leave a bucket in your shower, or scoop up the water when you're done taking a bath, you can save a lot of water. The water you collect from that can be used instead of water from sprinklers to water plants. That can save a surprisingly large amount of water and is a really simple way to help the environment.

There are ways you can make it so instead of clean water going into your toilets it will take greywater from the sinks in your house and reuse that.

Also this water can be used to flush toilets. Like water used to wash your hands can be collected and then used to water plants and flush toilets

I completely agree with you.  My family and I try our best to save and reuse as much water as possible.  Because our shower takes a bit to warm up, we have a bucket underneath to save the water until it gets warm.  When we wash rice or vegetables, we save the water.  My father, brother and I created our own irrigation system for our yard due to the California drought.  We have irrigation pipes throughout our yard which we connect to our homemade water bins.  We took two large trash bins (the ones people generally takeout for the garbage truck) and installed a water faucet on the bottom edge of each one.  We put all our saved water inside and when we need to water the plants or if the water gets too full, we connect the hose to the bins and the irrigation pipes and turn on the faucet.
We used to have sprinklers on a timer, but ever since this method we have saved so much water.  Doing this project with my family really made me realize how much water is wasted and how much could be saved and salvaged.  There have been many times where we found that we had TOO MUCH extra wa ter.
I think this is a great way to help the environment.  It is very inexpensive, will help conserve water, and money.
