It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Reusable Water Bottles?
A simple change in an everyday habit can be beneficial for the environment. Using reusable water bottles as opposed to plastic water bottles reduces the trash and the waste that you produce. It is also a money saving source and is practical all around. I bring a full bottle every day to school, so instead of buying a whole new plastic water bottle at lunch, I just have to refill my reusable water bottle. Based off an article I just read, in 2006, the US recycled just 25.7 % of the plastic water bottles used. This means, as the Container Recycling Institute noted, that of the 4.47 million tons of plastic water bottles sold, 1.1 million tons were recycled. Understandably, we can’t always refrain from using plastic water bottles, because sometimes it is easier to just grab a plastic bottle than wait to fill up a reusable one. So, whenever you can, recycle the bottle instead of just throwing it in the trash.

This is a really great idea. One article I read said that over 60 million plastic water bottles end up in landfills everyday, and that number is growing every year. Replacing plastic water bottles with reusable ones could significantly help to reduce this number.
I agree, a switch to a reusable water bottle will greatly benefit the environment. Reusable water bottles will also save a lot of money considering plastic water bottles are expensive compared to just buying one reusable water bottle that you can fill up. The production of plastic water bottles releases toxins and uses more water to produce than the actual amount of water put into the bottles. Reusable water bottles are much more convenient considering it will save you a lot more money. Bottled water can cost up to 500 times the cost of tap water. The solution is easy and benefits not only you,but the environment as well. Reusable water bottles are also better for your health as plastic water bottles contains a harmful substance called polyethylene terephthalate. This simple change can realy help our environment by reducing the amount of toxins and carbon dioxide in our environment.

Mimi - I agree with you that reusable water bottles are a better option for sustainability. In the long run buying a reusable water bottle is cheaper and obviously better for the environment than purchasing a plastic water bottle every day. I use my reusable bottle - hydroflask - which I really love. At my school Bishop O'Dowd, we are working on eliminating the use of plastic water bottles. We have done this by selling boxed water (cardboard boxed water) instead of plastic water bottles.

Thanks for the inputs. Especially when you participate in athletics, a water bottle can carry more water than your average plastic bottle. They are just overall more practical for everyday use at school and in extracurricular activities. Water fountains are frequent at many schools, so you won't usually be without a water source.
I have this great water bottle that holds 48 ounces, which is six cups. It can hold 3 disposable water bottles in it at a time. This is extremely important to me because making plastic water bottles it takes lot of oil and energy to make plastic water bottles. According to Wild Mint, Americans spend about the same amount of money on disposable water bottles as they do on engagement rings, so by having a reusable water bottle you are helping your family save money while helping save the planet. A lot of people prefer to drink out of plastic water bottles because they think the water is cleaner, but it actually isn't. In fact, out of 103 brands tested, one fifth contained synthetic chemicals. Antimony is one of the chemicals found in some plastic bottles and can lead to dizziness and depression or nausea and death. These chemicals can be taken into the body when people drink out of disposable plastic water bottles. Also, many water bottles are not recycled and eventually wind up in dumps. This is bad because we are wasting plastic that could be recycled, and also because t hese water bottles litter our planet. Everyone should consider getting a reusable water bottle because they are better for the environment, and they will save you some money.
