Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Reuse and Recycle

Every day, Americans alone throw away enough garbage to fill 63,000 garbage trucks, which if lined up end to end for an entire year would stretch half way to the moon. Only less than 2% of the total waste stream in the United States is recycled. That means that only 459,000 out of 23,454,900 garbage trucks contain recycling. This is horrible for our environment extreme measures should be taken. Half of the trash we throw out can be recycled, and our government shouldn’t promote industries that produce materials that can’t be composted or recycled. So much of our world could simply be repurposed. We as humans, the only known species as advanced as we are, have the capability to change this to keep our race, and many others, from going extinct with our dying planet. With a group effort, we can change greatly. Today we can do things as simple as buying thrifted clothes, donating our old clothes, repurposing plastic containers, composting the waste that fit the guidelines, and so much more. With a few changes every day, we could reduce our carbon footprints and save our worl d. If you’ve ever dreamed of being our hero, this is your chance.

I definitely agree. One way to save our dying planet is by recycling. If we recycle old clothes, metals, paper, and the occasional plastic, the Earth would be a lot cleaner. At lunch, I see plastic and paper bags everywhere that will only be thrown away later. My friends and I bring reusable bags and containers to eliminate waste. All the wasted plastic and paper sits in landfills after being thrown out. Landfills emit harmful gases, like carbon. Carbon is a greenhouse gas, which heats up the Earth when it is trapped in the atmosphere. By recycling, we would be lowering the potential amounts of paper and plastic in landfills, and ultimately lowering our carbon footprint. One ton of recycled newspaper saves 7,000 gallons of water, 1.7 barrels of oil, and 4.6 cubic yards of landfill space. One ton of recycled plastic saves 16.3 barrels of oil and 30 cubic yards of landfill space. It takes way less energy to produce things out of recycled material than out of new materials. When we reuse things, we are saving our natural resources. Instead of cutting down precious trees , r ecycled paper is a less damaging way to make paper. Trees can take over 20 years to reach full size. If we are constantly chopping down trees, there won't be any left in a few decades. Recycling protects our natural resources from pollution, too. It reduces the air and water pollution associated with burning things like fossil fuels and garbage. Incinerating our trash only creates more harmful greenhouse gases. Recycling has many benefits when it comes to rescuing a polluted home planet. If everyone reuses and recycles, there would be a significant effect.
