Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Recycle homework

Sam_O

There are so many homework and classwork assignments that end up in a trash can. If we just recycled it after we get it back from the teacher then we can reduce the amount of forests being cut down. Paper waste accounts for about 60% of the waste schools produce, if we just recycle we can bring that number down.

I agree with Sam_O- in school, everyone ends up throwing away all their paperwork, instead of recycling it. My school is actually trying to end this; we are largely electronically based. We are all given laptops, a lot of assignments are able to be electronically downloaded, and we all take notes on the computer. I believe that if schools start to slowly incorporate more electronics, we can bring that paper waste percentage down. Also, my school is starting to implement clearer recycling roles, which could also benefit kids trying to decide what is recyclable and what's not!

I also agree with Sam, and, like Caroline, I also attend a school where the students are required to have laptops. The laptops reduce paper usage and, in my opinion, increase efficiency. Forget an assignment? With a digital cloud system, you can easily access it online on a different platform. Typing is faster than writing. Computers and clouds can hold thousands of times more information than can be held on paper while also being less bulky and less of a burden for students to carry around in heavy backpacks, an action which, according the National Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (http://www.anationinmotion.org/ortho-pi … scoliosis/), can lead to scoliosis. Treating the scoliosis ultimately leads to more usage of fossil fuels through the treatment (for example, in the manufacturing of corrective braces). Using laptops is a step towards minimizing this issue. All these benefits of using laptops occur while reducing our nation's  incredible paper usage (see http://www.novadesk.com/blog/bid/57268/ … -and-Trees).
