Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Do you reuse old clothes and shoes?

jasmineravelli

In my family there is a good habit. My dad most of all thinks that we don’t have to throw away our clothes or our shoes when we're done with them. At first I thought he was not right as, in my opinion, it was a waste of space in our house and that nobody would have used them again, but then, when my brother was born he started using my old stepbrother’s clothes and shoes. If my dad had thrown them away, now he would have to spend a lot of money. What do you guys think about that? Do you reuse old clothes or you always buy new ones?

I live in a family of three and most of my wardrobe is hand-me-downs from my older sister. Once I outgrow clothes, my mom either brings it to Goodwill for someone else to use, or we give it to family friends who need clothes for a younger child.

Hey Jasmine! So I actually do a combination of both; I have two older cousins that have a ton of clothes they've outgrown, so whenever they visit, they always bring new clothes for me to have.  However, my older sister is smaller than me, so sometimes when I buy clothes, I pass down my old ones to her. It's the same idea for shoes: me and my mom share some, so we don't have to buy as much. However, if we have tons of old clothes, we either donate them or give them to family friends.

I reuse both clothes and shoes handed down from my cousins and family. Since, I don't have a younger sibling, I either donate all my (in tact) old clothes and shoes to Salvation Army or take them to India when I visit.

I do both as well. Whenever my older sister outgrows her clothes, she passes them down to me. I also have a little sister and a bunch of younger cousins that I give my clothes to. The majority of my wardrobe is hand-me-downs from either older sisters or older cousins.

Like Mia, when I outgrow a piece of clothing, we bring it to a local charity or I give it to my brother.  Or, since I have fiends who are smaller in size than I am, we give them the clothes.  But, if the clothes are too worn down, I keep the clothes and make little "scrap memoirs" with them.  Basically, I cut out a piece of cloth from the clothing, and turn it into something.  Be it a picture, a person, or otherwise, It's fun for me, and it produces little waste.

I am the youngest person in my family so I end up getting a plethora of hand-me-downs. After I outgrow these clothes, I too end up donating them to local shelters and thrift stores. The majority of my clothes are from thrift stores and my older family members.
Margo, I think that is a great idea! If you work well with cloth you could also make quilts and things like that out of old clothes.

I also do the same as Alyssa, I get a lot of my clothing from my older sister and when i outgrow it I give it to charity. Margo's idea sounds fun but not for everyone. Lots of people do not have the time or are willing to put forth the effort.

I have a younger sister, and whenever I outgrow my clothes, I give them to her. Since she's the youngest in the family, she can't hand down any of her clothes, so we donate them instead. However, sometimes the clothes can be too worn down. When this happens, my sister usually will make little crafts with them, just like Margo. She would cut out little pieces and stitch them together to make a multitude of crafts (e.g. clothes for her dolls, little coin purses, etc.).
Doing this can be beneficial for both my sister and others. If more people were to do this, we'd be reducing the amount of clothing we throw away. It also enhances the imagination of whoever is making the craft.

I have a younger sister and she gets the majority of my clothes that I have grown out of. When she grows out of her clothes, we donate most of them, but some of them are very worn out, have holes, and have stains. We can't donate these, but we do make use of them other than just throwing them out. My sister uses the old tshirts to make new things for stuff like school projects. My family is very eco-friendly and are always looking for new ways to help the environment.

Once my younger sister grows out of my old clothes, we give them to our younger cousins. This works very well because I have tons of younger cousins, and they always need clothes. Once they grow out of the clothes, they hand the clothes down to their younger siblings or some of our other younger cousins. The clothes get pretty worn down over the years, but if they aren't too terrible, they will either hand them off to younger people they know or donate them.

I come from a large family, so it's hard for everyone to get exactly what they want. I have a younger sister, so she gets all of my small clothes. I also share clothes with most of my friends. Since my siblings and I are growing out of our old childhood clothing, we have boxes and boxes of children's clothes. At least once a month my mom donates piles of clothing and toys to Goodwill or other families in need. I love that my family is aware of the environment whenever we recycle clothing or toys. One thing that I enjoy are thrift shops, especially the tiny, trendy ones. I rarely go to them, but when I do, I always find something really cool and in good quality. Donating/recycling clothes helps the environment and the people in need of the clothing.
