Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Sustainable Clothing

I recently read an article about actress, Emma Watson, wearing a dress with fabric made completely of plastic bottles and other recyclable materials. I thought that this was a really interesting idea, so I did some research to find out how it's done. The brand she got the fabric from is called Newlife Yarns, and the yarn for the fabric is produced in Italy. It is made in a three step process that is completely mechanical (no dangerous chemicals) and the ultimate product is similar to polyester.
I had no idea it was possible to make fabric from used plastic bottles, but I think this would be a really great way for our country to reuse what we throw away. Fashion is a huge part of the American culture, and it can generate a lot of waste. I think we could reduce a lot of that, if our clothing was sustainable to begin with. However, I'm still unsure if this kind of process could be done on a large scale, and it could result in higher clothing costs.

That’s really cool! I didn’t know there was clothing made from recyclable materials like bottles, especially worn by celebrities. I’m interested in knowing what article you got this information from. Although I hadn’t heard of clothing made of recyclable materials, I have heard of purses made of discarded materials like pop tops from soda cans and old record albums. My aunt even showed me her purse made of leftover candy wrappers. A company called Vy and Elle uses vinyl billboards and banners to make handbags. They have recycled forty tons of billboard vinyl. There are many other companies like Vy and Elle that make handbags from different recyclable materials. Changing our wardrobe to clothing made from recyclable materials may not be the most practical idea, but we can definitely incorporate recyclable handbags and purses instead.

That is super cool Juliana! I haven't heard about recycling materials into fabrics for clothing before. Another way we could reduce waste in the fashion industry is by making the clothing we own be put to the best use possible. What I mean is that we hand down our old and out grown clothing to friends, family, or donate them. When I clean out my closet I always give the clothing that is still in usable condition to my neighbor that is two years younger than me. My neighbor takes what she wants and donates the rest of it to the Malala Fund. This fund accepts donations of clothing and up cycles them to help women around the world receive the education they deserve. I think by handing down old clothes and by recycling them into new materials is a great way to reduce waste in the industry. https://www.malala.org
