Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Spring Cleaning

During spring many people, including myself, enjoy to go through all of my items and dispose of any of the items that I no longer like or use. Recently though, I realized that there are more efficient and environmentally safe ways of doing this. First when going through any personal items sort them into five piles; items that you want to keep, items to sell, items to donate, items to refurbish, and items to dispose of (whether through trash or recycling or composting). The items that you want to keep should be put away, and items that you want to dispose of should be put into bags (more on this later). For the rest of the items it's up to you, if you think that the item would be useful for a project or that you could DIY it into something else, then do it! Determine whether the items are in good enough condition to resell or give to charity, you can even get a tax write off (or a write off for your parents)for the items that you donate. If the rest of your items are in not good enough condition to donate, sell, refurbish, or keep, add them to the trash pile. Before you t hrow away all of your items take a minute to sort them out into compost, trash, and recycling. Many people skip this last step, check your items such as old makeup, clothing, furs, batteries, toys, plastics, pretty much anything that you throw out. Go to dependable websites online and determine where you need to dispose of these items. Many of these things contain harsh chemicals that will seep into landfills and are harmful to the environment, so these websites will tell you how to properly dispose of them without endangering both the people and the land in landfills. The benefit is immense, not only will you have cleaned and organized your room, but you also will have helped the environment.

I definitely agree that it is important to make the good decision to try and reuse anything you might think of throwing away. DIY projects are a great way to reuse different items as there are many instructions online that can show how to turn one thing into something even better. Donating and selling are great ways of reusing clothing, toys, and other items. Whether it be donating old clothes to goodwill or a younger family member, or selling things at a garage sale, it can help the environment greatly by doing so. I personally often times will go to second hand or clothing exchange stores as a way of reusing my clothes. At these stores, you can bring in your old clothes that may not suit you and exchange it for money or new clothes that you would wear. Online is a great place to get ideas on how you can reuse any items you may not want to keep. There are many ways to reuse items that you may have not known of before. It is important to take into consideration all the possible things you could do with unwanted items in your possession besides throwing it away.
