Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Reusing and Repurposing for the Greater Good of the Earth

One of the best and most effective ways we can make sure Earth continues to be a sustainable, inhabitable, and healthy planet is by doing the easy thing of reusing and repurposing our materials. Everyone has heard of the Pacific Garbage Patch and how it's bigger than the state of Texas! However, not everyone knows that it is only one of many garbage patches in oceans around the world. They are affecting our bodies of water, the health of our sea life, and of course us. All of these garbage patches were created from the large amounts of waste that households like your own throw away every day. Things we could be recycling to be remade into something else or reused for other purposes are getting thrown away every day while more and more items are being created just to join the same cycle. Plastic NEVER goes away. Although it can break down into smaller pieces, every plastic bottle, bag, container, mechanical pencil, etc. made in every pollution emitting factory on earth will always be on here releasing artificial toxins into our water and atmosphere. One way we can make a  change is to reuse and repurpose. Even if something looks like it should be trash, often times, there is a whole other innovative creation waiting to be created from something that was.

I agree with Nia because not only does reusing and reducing our waste help us in the long run as we are living on this Earth and how we treat it affects us. It also leads to the death of wildlife all over when animals eat the trash we carelessly throw away which can lead to sickness and death. We are harming a fragile ecosystem instead of doing our part in keeping down the amount of waste we use and even using that waste for something else. If we keep ignoring this problem it will continue to harm wildlife, our atmosphere, and ecosystems around the world which will lead to an unhealthy future. According to the New York Times, about 300 million tons of plastic is produced each year and only about 10% of that is recycled. An estimated 7 million tons ends up in the sea each year. All of this plastic never goes away it just deteriorates into smaller parts. Which then harms sea life and destroys ecosystems. It really depends on if you do not want to see your grandkids or even kids living in a world where fresh water is inaccessible or some of the animals you've grown up with  and loved have gone extinct. You can do your part by not throwing away that plastic bottle and instead reusing it or printing on both sides of paper instead of just using one side and wasting the other. It all starts with us.
