Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Reusing items

Mya_S

Instead of just throwing everthing away everyone should try to reuse things. For example clothes can easily be reused passing them on to your siblings or donating them to some one else. This is great way to help out our earth.

While reusing items is a great way to help our Earth, sometimes reusing isn't an option. What if the hand-me-downs be too destructed? That's when recycling would fit the situation better

I think you make a really good point! This a practice that I am very much familiar with. I have an older sister and I remember always getting clothes that were once hers. When I clean out my own closet I always put my old clothes in bags and give them to my neighbor that is younger than me. I do not give her clothes that are too worn and toss those items out. My neighbor keeps what fits and what she likes. For all the clothes she does not keep she lets her friends pick though and take what they want. She donates the remaining clothes to the Malala Foundation. This foundation up cycles old shirts and pants to help women around the word receive the education that they deserve. I always feel good to know that my old clothes are being put to good use. I think this is something more people should try doing.

Whenever I grow out of clothes or have clothes I don't wear we usually give them away because  we can't hand them down because we aren't the same size or we have totally different styles.

I agree when we can we should pass down clothes and find new ways to repurpose things around us.

Donating clothes to siblings or people, helps more than you think. It can help your carbon footprint go down as well because it will lower your purchases if you don't have to buy anything and use reusable things.

JaslynnC

I think that this is a good, because it will help save money and keep your carbon footprint down. If your siblings are able to fit the clothing I think you should pass it down to them.

You should reuse as much as possible but some items are not reusable

hodin

true that some items are not reusable - then you can ask yourself the questions: do I really need that thing? Is there some "greener" alternative that I can use instead?

donating clothes is really good. i give away my old clothes to charity organisation or my younger  brother and sister

I agree with you that reusing items is a very important thing. For example, buying used clothes doesn't only help to save the environment, but it is also a lot cheaper.

In some countries there could be more second hand shops. I think those would be useful not only for clothes, but also for other items that you don't use anymore, but are still functional.

anjakonjc

I never throw my old clothes away. I give them to my cousins or I donate them to charities. In my country (Slovenia) there are some bins for used clothes. I thought that they donate these clothes to charities, but they actually sell them to second-hand shops all over the world and make profit. I think that this is absurd and that they should give these clothes to charities.

Good point, when my clothes don't fit me I either pass them on to family or sell them to friends. It's a good way to reuse them because they might be old to you but they are brand new to those you give them too. It would even be better if we donated our clothes charities or those who needed them so we can help each other out and the world.
