Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Instead of throwing away your leftover food or parts of the food you can’t eat, you should consider composting it.  Composting is good because instead of it being smashed down to waste, it’s being used as a way to help the environment.  And when you have plastic water bottles or milk jugs, don’t just recycle it.  You can reuse the items buy using the water bottles more than once or keep water in the big gallon jugs for watering plants or other uses.

I think that this is definitely a concept that more people need to be trying. Composting is a very efficient and sustainable process that helps plants thrive. But there are other ways people can repurpose trash, food waste, etc. Although we should be using reusable containers and water bottles, when we do not, people need to be more innovative and turn things like plastic or paper bags, cardboard boxes, or even plastic water bottles into items that we can use. At my old school we repurposed plastic bags and plastic bottles into plant terrariums, jewelry, scarves, and bags. We also turned the food waste into little compost nutrient balls that helped plants grow tremendously. We also made vertical gardens like the ones on the following website from recycled crate platforms, (http://www.boredpanda.com/plastic-bottl … ing-ideas/) and hung them on fences in our outdoor courtyards. It is little innovative tricks like these which will reduce our use of plastic tremendously.

I completely agree with this, I think that many people are wasting a lot of food, which costs people money, and that composting and saving left overs will really help our planet. And with the less food waste we have then there is less wrapping which goes into the trash that helps our planet. I thought this was a very good idea because the estimated food waste in America is around 30-40% of the food supply which could help us help so many people, and help our planet.
