Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Trashing Recyclables

Why do people always throw away stuff? Can't it just easily be recycled? If we throw stuff away, then we make tons of CO2 replacing them. Recycle them, and we make a lot less CO2, because we can reuse them, making them into new things. But that's kinda obvious. So why throw this stuff away? It doesn't make any sense.

I think that the issue in our society today is that not enough people are educated on what to put in what bin. We all want to help our environment, but many people don't know what qualifies as recycling and landfill. I think that if cities were to educate their residents more on the rules of recycling, likely via visual representations on trash cans, then it would have a major impact on the amount of waste being put in the landfill.

I agree with Connor. I live in California which is generally environmentally friendly and educated. Many people in California were taught at an early age what can be recycled and what has to be thrown away. Many people in American and across the world are not taught the proper way to dispose of trash. I think that if there was a world wide effort to educate people on recycling, carbon emission would diminish.

I agree that disposing of trash is a big impact on our carbon footprint. According to https://skepticalscience.com , for every pound of household trash we put into landfills, 40 pounds of CO2 is put into the atmosphere. With this, according to http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/ , humans produce 246 million tons of waste every year. So, with these stats, an unbelievable amount of trash is produced annually, and with that, an extreme amount of carbon dioxide is produced as well as a result. I think that because of the large amount of CO2 produced in the atmosphere by trash alone, recycling things would be better for the environment and reduce our carbon footprint.

I agree it is a nationwide problem that our generation will have to deal with later on down the road. It is our job to educate people on the correct ways to get rid of trash and inform them on what happens to trash when it is put in the wrong container. The landfill is responsible for about 18.2% of methane emissions in the U.S. in 2014. Also releasing 107.8 million tons of CO2 into the air. We has a human race are responsible for 82.2% of all U.S. CO2 emissions. These seemingly small acts can add up and really cause harm on our environment.
