It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Reuse and Recycle
As many people know, the trash we throw away everyday in bins and cans do not simply disappear. All that garbage that is not reusable is put into massive landfills that increase in proportion as we speak. For example it will take approximately 700 years just for plastic to degrade. According to the New York Times, 300 million tons of plastic is produced each year. In my opinion, I think that products that are made of plastic should be able to last and be reused. A large reason why so much plastic is being wasted is because many things are made for one use, such as plastic water bottles or packaging. Additionally I think that this could be extended out to things other than plastic, as we can make things more biodegradable. There are many things we don't pay attention to, and that in the long run has contributed to the excessive production of waste. I think that if we start to realize the little changes we can make, a larger, more positive change will occur.
This is a growing problem across the world Tommy and I think we need to come up with a solution due to the rapid rate land fill is growing at. According to https://steelysdrinkware.com/growing-gl … ll-crisis/ the average American throws out about 1,000 pounds of garbage each year. All this garbage must go somewhere and it is disposed of in landfill. This site predicted that the amount of landfill we have now will nearly double by the year 2025. I think a good solution to this problem is placing more compost and recycling bins in public areas. Our school is fortunate to be aware about this problem and we help by placing compost and recycling bins across campus to reduce the amount of garbage placed in landfill.
Myles, I agree with your standpoint. I do believe that more things can be done in order to reduce the amount of garbage that is produced. I think that the statistics and the link that you provided help strengthen your argument, as they give more insight and context. Additionally, I also agree that we are very fortunate as a school to be able to realize the impact we are making on the environment around us as it is necessary for us to start making a change.
I agree with all of the posts prior to mine. It is crazy to think that one little amount of plastic wont degrade on its own for 700 years. This means that there is that much more trash we are stuck with for that amount of time. The other scary part about this is that more and more plastic is being made everyday. All this material builds up and hurts our environment. Recycling is good because it helps take care of the plastic in a better way than letting it sit but its still not ideal. The best thing we can do is reuse because this uses the same plastic for more than one purpose. Directly reusing the product means we don't have to pollute the environment with the fuels burnt at a recycling center that are used as energy to clean the plastic and other recyclable materials. It also means we don't have to make more plastic so we can cut down on the amount we have on the planet. The other problem besides polluting the Earth with all these products is one day we will eventually run out. Some of the things we make are made with non renewable resources so once we use up all the material we cant make the desired product. I got this idea, as well as learned some advice for recycling, reusing and reducing from this website: http://www.livestrong.com/article/19716 … recycling/
This is certainly a scary thought. To think that the waste we have created will stay for centuries to come is just terrifying. We must think of ways to decrease such waste. As the previous posts say, we need to be more open about recycling. Recycling has to be made a thing that is easy to do. We must make people help decrease this waste that sits for centuries. Having it be recycled will d eres de the necessity for the creation of more plastic, and makes it easier to create new products due to there already being plastic. Having more products that are biodegradable would also greatly decrease waste, or make it leave earlier. We must start soon to decrease the waste as much as possible.
