Reuse & Repurpose

It's very tempting to throw things away or even drop them in a recycling bin when we are done with them. Is there a better way?

Share your ideas for extending the “lives” of the items that we buy and use, and their packaging as well!

Reusing Plastic

Reusing plastic is really helpful to the environment because nearly 3/4 of the garbage in the world is plastic. There is a whole island called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch mostly made of plastic. All of that plastic hurts the marine life and pollutes the water. Using that plastic can help reduce waste and create resources for people who don't have them. There are already companies, like Unifi, creating clothes out of recycled bottles. These clothes could be given to the homeless and poor people. Plastic is also being used to make tables and benches. Those benches and tables could be given to schools in poorer  communities that don't have desks, tables, and chairs for the students.

I agree plastic has a very negative impact on our environment. Along with recycling plastic another thing to do would be to stop buying products with plastic covering or buy the product with the least. This will help limit the amount of plastic that is actually being used and thrown away. Also by buying and reusing cloth napkins and towels you could limit the amount of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere from manufacturing.

I completely agree with you and I think you have a good point. Plastic can be recycled and reused very easily, and it does not take up a lot of your time or effort to do. A study estimates that there is more than 5 trillion plastic pieces weighing more than 250,000 tones floating in the sea. All those pieces of plastic could be very useful and benefit the world, but unfortunately they are just laying in the sea, ruining our oceans and harming underwater creatures. We can all help to reuse and recycle plastic, and if every person puts a little bit of effort into making a change, we could help change the earth greatly.

I totally agree with what you are saying. Plastic is a good resource to reuse especially because it it ¾ of the world's trash. We could use this to recreate half the things we make and have less of a carbon footprint.  I think based off all the information we should try to recycle so we could use things.

I agree with you. I think that reusing plastic is a good way to reduce carbon footprints because by reusing plastic water bottles we can slowly start to reduce the amounts of plastic being contributed to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Another thing we could do is stop using plastic packaging to transport goods that are being shipped because as the item is being shipped, part of the package can fall off which can lead to polluting the Earth even more. If we recycle plastic then it can reduce the amount of plastic that affects marine life and the water.

Climate deniers may say that it still contributes to our carbon footprint, and it does, but not nearly as much. Yes, we emit some carbon in the process of recycling, but it is much much smaller than if we were to throw everything in the garbage. Ultimately, it is incredibly much better to recycle and use less plastic.
